Friend L, Trooper
The Natal Rebellion Medal 1906 was instituted by the Natal Government for services in operations following the Zulu rebellion. This medal was awarded to Trooper Friend and is also inscribed ‘Intelligence Corps’ at a time when no such entity formally existed in the British Order of Battle. A member of locally recruited forces, Trooper friend illustrates the tradition of recruiting ‘horse’ soldiers with local knowledge to conduct intelligence activities that require speed and mobility.
