Grant C, Lieutenant Colonel
Lieutenant Colonel Grant (1780-1829) Was an intelligence Officer during the Napoleonic Wars. Grant never thought of himself as a spy and always rode in full uniform, often behind enemy lines, to not the positions and strength of the enemy.
Captured by the French in 1812 he later escaped; On June 18 he took part in the Battle of Waterloo for which this medal was issued.
He later commanded the 54th Regiment of Foot in the First Anglo-Burmese war.
He appears as a character in Susanna Clarke’s fantasy novel set in the period, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.
