Colonel HWB ‘Bill’ Hancock MC served in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment during the war and was awarded an immediate Military Cross for leading a bayonet charge against strong opposition, capturing many prisoners.

In 1957 the Army Council approved the establishment of a permanent cadre of 100 regular officers for the Intelligence Corps and, in 1958, Lieutenant Colonel Hancock MC transferred to the Corps as one of this “First 100”. Before this change, officers in the Corps only held Emergency, Short Service or Extended Service Commissions.

He developed the Army’s Psychological Operations policy for major war scenarios and, after service in the Cabinet Office, he was appointed Chief Instructor of the School of Military Intelligence at Ashford. He died in 1999.

His medals are, left to right; the Military Cross, 1939-45 Star, France and Germany Star, War Medal, Defence Medal and the United Nations Korea Medal.
