Captain RJ Isaac, was the only Field Security Officer to be awarded the Military Cross during WW2. Part of the citation for this medal reads “Captain Isaac’s name is a by-word in the Division; he and his section are always found in the forefront of the battle.”

Isaacs enlisted for boy service in the Grenadier Guards in 1927, transferred into the Royal Military Police in 1932 serving in Egypt on Special Investigation and Field Security work from 1934-37. He was part of the British Expeditionary Force that sailed for France in 1939.

He commissioned into the Intelligence Corps in 1941 and served variously in Wales, India and, from January 1944, in Burma. In addition to his Military Cross he was awarded the 1939-45 Star, Burma Star, Defence Medal and the War Medal with a Mention in Despatches Oak Leaf.

After the War he remained in the Army and added The General Service Medal with Clasps for the Arabian Peninsula and Malaya. The award of the MBE in 1953 was followed by the OBE in 1955, chiefly for his work in Psychological Operations, a skill in which he excelled.

Lieutenant Colonel Isaac OBE MC became the Intelligence Corps’ first Corps Lieutenant Colonel at Maresfield. He retired in 1962 but, as a civilian, he continued to instruct the US Army in Europe in Psychological Operations until 1974.
